Daniel Alfredsson, Zdeno Chara Named All-Star Game Captains

by Ben on January 18, 2012

With all of the love that Ottawa Senators fans showed for their team through the voting process for the 2012 NHL All-Star Game—they singly-handedly voted in five Sens players—it’s only fitting that the most popular Senator, Daniel Alfredsson, would be named teamed captain.

The other team captain is none other than “the Big Z,” Boston Bruins captain Zdeno Chara.

Alfredsson and Chara were teammates for four seasons in Ottawa (2001-02 to 2005-06), and they have both had terrific seasons thus far.

Alfredsson, in his 13th season as captain of the Senators, is third on the team with 15 goals and 35 points. He’s helped lead a young Ottawa team fifth place in the Eastern Conference standings, ironically, just one point Chara’s Bruins for the top spot in the Northeast Division.

The 34-year-old Chara leads all NHL defenseman with a plus-25 rating while playing an average of 24:36 per game. The big blueliner also has 27 points in 41 games.

The two will take turns picking their All-Star teams at the 2012 NHL All-Star Player Fantasy Draft on Jan. 26.
