It’s hard to believe that the Buffalo Sabres were tied for the last spot in the NHL’s Eastern Conference just seven weeks ago. Following the trade deadline, most believed that Ryan Miller and the guys in front of him were already setting up tee times and looking ahead to the 2012-13 season. And even after the team was able to string together some wins, they also suffered some crushing defeats that seriously impeded what little chance they had at making the playoffs anyway.
But they persevered.
That’s been the theme of their season, and that was the theme in their thrilling 6-5 overtime win over the Toronto Maple Leafs Tuesday night.

Apparently, Ryan Miller is becoming a target for forwards in the NHL.
In his first game back since recovering from a concussion he suffered after getting run over by Boston Bruins forward Milan Lucic, a fragile Miller was taken out by Nashville Predators forward Jordin Tootoo during the second period of Saturday night’s game between the Preds and the Buffalo Sabres.
However, unlike Lucic, who merely received a little shove, Tootoo was immediately pounced upon by all five Sabres on the ice, including Miller.

It’s no secret that the Boston Bruins and Buffalo Sabres aren’t the best of friends.
However, with Milan Lucic’s hit (which was either intentional or unintentional depending on what city you are from) on Ryan Miller in Saturday night’s game at TD Garden, the two now seem to be sworn enemies for life.
The incident occurred as Lucic was chasing down a loose puck that got away from him on a potential breakaway. Miller thought he could beat Lucic to the puck, so he came out of the crease to clear it away. Lucic ended up crashing into Miller, with his arms up, knocking off Miller’s mask, practically decapitating him in the process.

The 2011-12 NHL season is officially underway, and of the four teams that traveled to open up the season overseas, the new-and-improved Buffalo Sabres looked the most dominant.
After a decisive 4-1 victory in Helenki, Finland over the Anaheim Ducks Friday, the Sabres continued their offensive surge Saturday with a 4-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings at O2 World Arena in Berlin. Thomas Vanek, the Sabres leading goal-scorer last season, is already off to a hot start with two goals and three assists in his first two games.

If you can believe it or not, Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff has been behind the bench in Buffalo for 13 straight seasons. However, heading into his 14th season at the helm, he may have more pressure on him than ever before.
Following a disappointing opening-round defeat at the hands of the Philadelphia Flyers during last season’s Stanley Cup playoffs, the Sabres have retooled their lineup with the hope that they can advance to the Eastern Conference Semifinals for the first time since 2007.

Although the focus of the hockey world has been deadlocked on the aftermath of the 2011 NHL entry draft, there were several big deals made over the weekend that can’t be overlooked.
Quite possibly the biggest was the Philadelphia Flyers signing of goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov on Thursday. The Flyers signed the Russian netminder to a huge nine-year contract worth $51 million after they cleared cap space by trading away forwards Jeff Carter and Mike Richards. The knock against Philadelphia has always been their shaky goaltending. After another questionable season for them between the pipes in 2011 (in which they used three different starting goaltenders), will Bryz finally be the answer?

The 2011 NHL playoffs are officially underway and all the expectations leading in to this postseason have been met—with a couple surprises, too. Now that each of the 16 teams participating in this season’s postseason have Game 1 behind them, here are the highlights.
Goaltending – Shutouts seem to be the early theme thus for in the playoffs. There have already been four shutouts and all of the goalies seem to be on top of their game thus far. Marc-Andre Fleury followed up the best regular season of his career with a solid Game 1 against the Tampa Bay Lightning, making 32 saves in a 3-0 victory at the first playoff game played at Consol Energy Center. Roberto Luongo, Carey Price and Ryan Miller all followed suit, blanking their respective opponents.
