There’s a saying in sports, “You have to learn to lose before you can win.” In spite of how many times the Columbus Blue Jackets have done it, they’ve yet to win a playoff game. However, plenty of teams over the course of time have proved this adage right. Gretzky’s Oilers Dynasty needed to lose to the 83 Islanders. Those Islanders needed to rebound from several playoff disappointments before winning an astonishing 19 consecutive series. The 97 Detroit Red Wings were guided to the Cup after seeing what it took to win by New Jersey and Colorado. New Jersey had their hearts crushed by Stephane Matheau, but the following year won the Stanley Cup in a shortened season. Lastly, the 94 Rangers were a team that dealt with adversity for three seasons and in their title defense, they taught the Quebec Nordiques/Colorado Avalanche a valuable lesson; move from Quebec and you can acquire Patrick Roy. This list could be endless, despite the few that seemed to come out of nowhere (2006 Carolina Hurricanes), here’s a list of heartbroken four teams to watch out for:

As the 2013 Winter Classic approaches, will any of these coaches make the impressions these did?
As HBO play’s it’s highly rated NFL Hard Knocks series, audiences get to see the great work by NFL head coaches (this year is 1st year Head Coach of the Miami Dolphins Joe Philbin). However, that’s the pre-season. In December, HBO will run it’s third installment of it’s 24/7 series for the NHL as the Road to the Winter Classic. This year will feature two new head coaches, Detroit‘s Mike Babcock and Toronto’s Randy Carlye. Both coaches once coached the Anaheim (Mighty) Ducks and are now going to be center stage of the NHL’s showcase regular season game in front of 100,000+ at Wolverine Stadium in Ann Arbour, Michigan. The question either coach will have to answer: will their charisma match those who came before them? Will the results be the same? Will they have success? Those are some of the factors that will shape this list.

Last season, the NHL didn’t fail to disappoint. It produced several games that won’t make this list- and will be very New York Rangers heavy- but Gary Bettman and NBC were incredibly happy with the NHL’s quality of games last year and generated excitement that carried into the post-season. Hopefully, Bettman isn’t stupid enough to lockout the NHLPA because then we won’t see great games like these.

On Monday, the New York Rangers made the biggest trade of the off-season when they acquired Rick Nash of the Columbus Blue Jackets. In return, the Rangers sent popular-but-maligned forwards Brandon Dubinsky, Artem Anisimov, promising young defenseman Tim Erixon and a first round pick. At the end of the Rangers season, www.hockeyticketsonline.net detailed what the Rangers needed to do in the offseason, but just how good is this deal?

Two NHL families were reunited this weekend at the 2012 NHL draft in Pittsburgh through blockbuster trades.
The first one came on Friday, when it was announced that Pittsburgh Penguins forward Jordan Staal would be joining his brother, Eric, in Carolina. Just a day after turning down a 10-year contract extension, Jordan was traded to the Hurricanes in exchange for the No. 8 overall pick in the draft, center Brandon Sutter and defenseman Brian Dumoulin.

The Philadelphia Flyers hosted the New Jersey Devils for game 5 of the NHL playoffs Eastern Conference semifinals on Tuesday, May 8th. The Devils held a 3-1 game lead in this best of seven series and were looking to take advantage of the absence of Flyers star forward and leading scorer Claude Giroux by ending the series quickly. Giroux would miss game 5 to serve a one game suspension after an illegal check to the head of Devils forward Dainius Zubrus that occurred in game 4.

The Philadelphia Flyers‘ season is over. After a 3-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, the Broadstreet Bullies once again fell short of their quest of capturing a Stanley Cup.
And although everyone in the City of Brotherly Love will once again want to blame the goaltending for the Flyers‘ shortcomings, Ilya Bryzgalov, despite his inconsistencies all season long and through the playoffs, is not to be held solely responsible for what will be another Cup-less year in Philadelphia.
