Brad Richards Signs with Rangers

by Ben on July 2, 2011

Brad Richards, the alleged “prize” of the 2011 free agency pool, surprised no one Saturday when he agreed to a nine-year contract to play for the New York Rangers.

Richards will be heading to broadway for $60 million, with an annual cap hit of around $6.667 million. Richards had spent Friday talking with the Kings, Maple Leafs and Lightning about why their teams and cities would he his best destination, but when it came down to it, none of those teams could offer the same allure—or cash—as New York.

080108 bruins canes (218)July 1 is just around the corner, and although the free agent market isn’t as loaded as it has been in year’s past, there were still be a few scorers out there that plenty of teams would be happy to nab. Here are the top five forwards on the free-agent market.

1. Brad Richards

With the Philadelphia Flyers signing of Ilya Bryzgalov to a huge nine-year, $51 million contract, it’s important to keep in mind that there are still plenty of talented goaltenders available on the free-agent market. Here are the top five.

1. Tomas Vokoun

It’s no secret that Vokoun wants out of Florida. The 35-year-old netminder is nearing the end of his career and he seems pretty hellbent on only playing for a contender. He has already been offered a deal from Avangard Omsk of the KHL over in Russia, so unless a Cup contender comes to the table (ahem, the Washington Capitals), we may have seen the last of Vokoun in the NHL.

Tampa Bay Lightning Force Game 7

by Ben on May 26, 2011

Jones Lecavalier and ThompsonWhen most people talk of the “Big Three” down in Miami, they are usually referring to LeBron, D-Wade and Bosh. But on Wednesday night, it was Vincent Lecavalier, Martin St. Louis and Steven Stamkos who looked the guys that were leading their team to a championship.

While Tampa Bay’s Big Three had combined for only 1 goal and 3 points in the previous three games, the trio of superstars combined for three goals and eight points in Game 6 to help lead the Lightning to a 5-4 victory at St. Pete Times Forum, evening the series at three wins apiece.

Tyler SeguinThere aren’t too many Stanley Cup playoff games in which a 41-year-old netminder gets pulled and a 19-year-old phenom scores four points.

But Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals between the Boston Bruins and the Tampa Bay Lightning had all of that and more.

The phenom of course being Tyler Seguin. It’s hard to believe that the second overall pick in last year’s draft went pointless in his final 11 regular season games, only to be benched through the Bruins’ first 11 playoff games after acquiring the Chris Kelly at the trade deadline.

2011 Western Conference Finals

#1 Vancouver Canucks  vs. #2 San Jose Sharks

Caps/Islanders (Oct. 30, 2009) - 5At this point in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the last team that anyone thought would have their backs up against the wall is the Washington Capitals. But after blowing a third period lead in Game 3 and ultimately suffering a 4-3 defeat at the hands of the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Caps, the No. 1 seed in the East, are now down 3-0 in the series.

Many were wondering when Alexander Ovechkin was going to show up for the series, and in Game 3, he finally did. Ovechkin finished with a goal, an assist and five shots on net in more than 24 minutes of ice time. But despite his best effort, the Caps could not get the victory.

With the recent release of the nominees for all of the major regular season awards, the finalists for the most anticipated trophy have finally been unveiled. While there wasn’t too much speculation here, this year’s nominees for the Hart Trophy, the National Hockey League’s MVP award, are: Daniel Sedin of the Vancouver Canucks, Martin St. Louis of the Tampa Bay Lightning and Corey Perry of the Anaheim Ducks.
