Multiple news outlets reported last week that the Philadelphia Flyers would host the New York Rangers in the 2012 Winter Classic on January 2, 2012. The game will take place at the Phillies’ home park, Citizens Bank Park.
That the Flyers will be hosting a regional rival has excited Philadelphia fans and will make the game a hot ticket in two cities. While the previous five Winter Classics have all pitted rivals and teams located within reasonable driving distance of each other, including the Flyers’ visit to Fenway Park for a game against the Boston Bruins on New Year’s Day 2010, this will be the first time the two teams in the Winter Classic are located less than 100 miles from each other.
